This 3D print was modeled after a living coral colony on a Hawaiian reef using noninvasive underwater photogrammetry techniques and hand-painted by artist and science illustrator Glenda Lee Mahoney to demonstrate healthy vs. bleached coral tissue. You can view the digital model here

About the Artist: Glenda Lee Mahoney is an Illustration Editor at Annual Reviews and a freelance artist from Half Moon Bay, CA. She grew up on the coast and has always been inspired by the ocean and its creatures. Glenda holds a B.S. in aquatic biology from UC Santa Barbara and a graduate certificate in scientific illustration from UC Santa Cruz. Her specialties include information graphics, digital illustration, graphics editing, marine science, and ocean conservation. Her clients have included Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, NCEAS at UC Santa Barbara, the Holden Arboretum, and the University of Western Australia. She has been featured in shows around the Bay Area and Santa Cruz, and is excited to be collaborating with the Hydrous to promote coral reef conservation.
